On 5 December, World Soil Day (WSD) is celebrated annually as a way of drawing emphasis on the value of soil health and calling for the effective management of soil capital.
The International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) recommended an International Day for Soil Celebration in 2002. FAO has supported the formal establishment of WSD as a global awareness-raising platform under the Kingdom of Thailand’s leadership and within the scope of the Global Soil Partnership. In June 2013, the FAO Conference unanimously endorsed World Soil Day and, at the 68th UN General Assembly, requested its official adoption. The UN General Assembly responded in December 2013 with the declaration of 5 December 2014 as the first official World Soil Day.
The 5 December date was picked because it corresponds to the official birthday of the late H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, one of the key supporters of this initiative, King of Thailand.
